Yes, it seems to be a problem with dump.  Suggest you use cpio.  On
FreeBSD it is painfully slow (i.e. slower than the drive, requiring
perpetual rewinding - 9 MB/min on a TDC 4120) but backs up 940 MB (the du
of my drive) onto one 950 ft 45000 frpi tape (it is a 1.2 GB drive).  And 
of course you are not limited to a single partition.
