My /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 file looks like this: #!/bin/sh xloadimage -onroot /usr/local/lib/images/powerlogo.gif Assumming you have xloadimage then this will allow paint a nice picture behind the login window.
