Try configuring the /dev to correspond to a specific DOS COM port equivalent.
(/dev/cua00  ->  COM1, /dev/cua01 -> COM2, etc.)
And although the brand may be a Microsoft, you may have to select a different
setup in the XF86_Config (just look for the interface you have and the number
of buttons).

And if you have only two buttons, be sure to activate 3-button emulation.
