I think the 16550 implementation is broken. For a time I used a wierd brand
I/O controller that implemented the uarts in some kind of tiny IC, but it
was #@$! useless, it clocked more than 30k overruns in one week !!
If you get yourself a simple serial port card with a proper 16550 on it, all
will be well.
