Why the heck do all people here recommend running xdm -nodaemon based
on /etc/ttys???

IMHO, there's no good reason. Just simply start it off your rc.local
*without* the -nodaemon. (Perhaps add a sleep 2 to allow it to
properly daemonize itself before the `rc' shell terminates.) This
way, you can even finally get rid of the X server (by typing Ctrl-R at
the xdm login window). This is virtually impossible when launching it
from /etc/ttys.

I personally prefer launching it explicitly, btw. I've got a dummy
login called `xdm' that starts it. But that's a matter of taste.
