After finishing loading BSD, I tried X and all I get is a X pattern on the screen
and a X cursor which the mouse can move, but thats all it does. I also noticed that
Alt-F1 or Alt-F2 does not work anymore.

What is going on?
I very knowledgeable about unix but know nothing about X.
