There's no "might want to try" about it, actually.  My 3C509-COMBO would
not work in EISA mode.  You'll have to dig out the installation disk that
came with the card, and use the Configuration option to put it back into
ISA mode.  Specify 0x300 as the base I/O address, set the appropriate 
IRQ (mine's at 10), and specify the media type as well (FreeBSD defaults
to trying the 10Base2 interface, if I'm not mistaken - at the very least,
the UTP interface is the last one it'll try.  Guess what we're using on
my LAN?).  

My card has worked flawlessly since I've done this.
