Hi !

I currently consider buying an old Mac II ci, partly to replace my
even older Mac Plus, but also to run unix at home ( I use HP9000/7xx
workstations for my work). This would allow me to wait until the
status of free unices on PowerMacs becomes clearer. Before I make the
decision, I would be glad to hear from those of you who have
experienced with NetBSD on such a box.

I am mostly interested in using GNU Emacs, TeX and gcc/g++, in order
to write scientific papers, and develop/debug C++ programs which would
run later at full scale on the HP boxes.

1) Is this system comfortable enough for this use, or am I too
optimistic ? Does the cache card which can be found in some ci's make
a difference ? Would 8 Mb of core memory sufficient ? I am quite
confident that the above-mentionned packages can be compiled on
NetBSD. Am I in error ?

2) Can I run Xfree on such a machine ? How much memory does this
require ? I tried to find this out by myself, but I didn't see any
mention of the Mac IIci in the Xfree notes.

Thank you very much in advance for sharing your experience with me,
and possibly making a new NetBSD enthusiast.

Marc.
