I think that what you should do is kill the pppd process (which is probably
hogging the serial line).  What I do is that I have a kermit script
which dials in & fires up ppp before exiting.  Then all I have to do
to bring the connection down is kill pppd which hangsup the line.

(Note that you will need to tell your modem not to hangup when kermit
exits - I think that it is AT&D0)
