Turns out one of my SIMMs was bad. I replaced the bad SIMMs with good 
ones and everything is working fine now (after 2 days).

I'm now going to try building a kernel with "-O2 -m486 
-fomit-frame-pointer" and see if it runs OK. I suspect it will.
