| Your first problem is solved by using xdm. Modify the files in
| /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm to suit your installation and add the
| following line to your /etc/ttys file.
|
| ttyv3 "/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm -nodaemon" xterm on secure
|
| Now restart init with a kill -HUP 1 and then hey presto xdm should
| come up.
This worked for a while, but then I probably messed it up. I got tired
of a few bootup messages, and one of the following three things that I
did may have messed up xdm. Xdm now comes up in the background, but I
can't switch to it.
1) I messed around with the myname.my.domain and changed it to
something more palatable. I have no idea why this might affect xdm,
but I did it, so it is a candidate. I also changed the IP address
to 10.0.0.0, seeing as how this is allowed, for a stand-alone. I
performed these changes in various places, including but not limited
to /etc, /etc/namedb.
2) I was changing preferences for fvwm, and xdm, in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11
but didn't think I could have changed anything of that serious a
nature.
3) I rebooted once, forgetting to shut down xdm first.
I have tried removing the files in /tmp, and kill'ing xdm, but it
won't seem to work.
Could someone more clever and experienced than me please help me find
my mistake? If worse comes to worse, I am just learning, and there is
nothing serious on the machine, so I can reinstall, but I would rather
find out where I messed up.
FreeBSD 2.0.5 with whatever version of XFree comes with it.
