Hello,

first sorry for using this group but a posting to comp.protocols.tcp-ip
caused no response.

I am playing around with SLIP.

I did the following:
- Installed SLIP for SUNOS4.1.1 pl6 at the University
- Testest it against KA9Q on a MAC with direct link
- Installed 386BSD and X386 on my PC at home
(Patches of CGD for com.c installed)
- Got SLIP running by doing an 'slattach' (as root) after dialing in to
the University with a connection at v32bis/v42bis

Everything works ... ftp says 1.5KB/sec. ... X-Programms are displaying
over the modem-connection ... wow !

My problems are the following:

I compiled 'sliplogin' from the package 'slipware' which I recieved some
times ago. I set it up so that I must not be root to push the slip
connection. But when I dial in with kermit and logging in as the user
which has sliplogin as the login-shell the other side hangs up or
reports something about problems with the lock-file.
What can/must I do so that I must not get root when logging in to the
remote system ???

How can I get more throughput for FTP or the X11-Protocol - shall I
tweak some parameters ?

If I use the PC with a direct connection without a modem, the line hangs
after a short time independent to the line-speed. What problem can this
be. Is it the long (15m) kabel with rts/cts connected ? Does the SLIP
driver of bsd (and on the sun) take care of the cts/rts signals ???

Thanks in advance

RAINER
