I too am having this problem on a 386/40MHz machine with 4 megs of RAM
Tseng4000
and a Seagate ST1239A Hard Drive.
I need help desperatly.

It seems to work fine if a format the ENTIRE drive for unix, but can not
partion any for DOS the instant I do that I get that exact error.
I've tried putting BSD on first then DOS, and vice-versa. I've created tons
of different partions and nothing works except for ALL or NOTHING.
HELP!!!!!!!!!
