I too have had the same problem getting the 312 S3 server working. It started up,
but would immediately die when the xterm tried to display on it. I've gone back
to 311, which works fine with exactly the same config file (which incidently works
fine with 312 under Linux). From this it would appear the 312 binaries from the net
are broken in some way?

NB If I started X up without any local clients i.e. X -indirect <xdm-server>
it would work, but the display would be monochrome. Wierd.
