The PCI cards all come with their own unique ID, and 
that of the 2940 is different from that of the 2940W.

Since vendors don't announce PCI IDs in advance, there
is no way a kernel that was built before the card was
available to the driver writers could be made aware of
that new card, even if it fully emulates ist predecessor 
if the new features aren't touched.

For this reason, you'll either need to patch the driver
in 2.0.5, or install a more recent kernel, that knows 
about the 2940W in particular.

The latest 2.1 snapshots recognize the 2940W, so you may
want to use the boot floppy from the most recent SNAP.
DOn't know, whether you can actually use this to load
enough of the 2.0.5 system to be able to rebuild a kernel
with 2940W support under 2.0.5, though.

It would really help, if you had some other controller
at least for that boot strap step ...
