The sbin sources do correctly have an i386 subdir:

j@uriah 110% ls /usr/src/sbin/i386/ft
/usr/src/sbin/i386/ft:
CVS/      ft.8      ft.c      ftecc.c   Makefile  obj@      

Btw., you are more than welcome to maintain (and improve) the FreeBSD
ft driver!  It's sorta orphaned now...
