I thought I read that the 3c509 card wdriver was known to have problems.

I had the hang on a news server under linux with an ne2000 and found it
was a known driver bug in that environ with that card.

However, under freebsd, the ne2000 clone works like a charm - and I
replaced a 509 with an ne2000 just because of that hint wherever I read
it about 509's and freebsd.

Just an idea of a possible reason.
