DNS works fine locally but name lookups to nslookups to the machines connected
via ppp outside the local network fail.

How should i configure DNS that i can nslookup machines outside ?
Note: the ppp connection is not permanent and to hardwire the external
nameservers probably breaks the local DNS if the ppp link is not up.

any hints or pointers appreciated,
Jan
