  First, make sure you have all of the patches applied (see ftp.bsdi.com,
/bsdi/patches).

  Next, you may have a bad motherboard (this problem almost always means you
have a motherboard problem - I've seen a few reports of it happening during
PPP option negotiation, which is why I suggest you make sure you have all of
the patches applied).

  Try turning off the external cache - that may fix it. If not, I'd suggest
trying a different brand of motherboard (you should be able to re-use your
CPU chip, RAM, and expansion cards) and see if that helps. If you're using
a PCI motherboard on a non-Pentium system or a PCI+VLB or PCI+EISA mother-
board on a Pentium system, I'd suggest trying a VLB board (non-Pentium) or
a PCI+ISA (only) (Pentium) board. The combo boards seem to have more prob-
lems than the more "vanilla" ones.
