I have ppp configured and setup on my BSDI box,  so I think.

However i notice that the netstat -i command gave me the following
results:

Notice that when my modems are quiet, there is still a link to ppp1
interface.   When ppp0 is used, nothing else gets through.

Please help.  Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
