Right now I have my wife's PC set up as a terminal, hooked up to my
FreeBSD box through a serial port. She has an account on my box. I
am running SLIP to dial in to my service provider, and she can log in
from her PC and just type "telnet thishost.thatdomain" and ppp
automatically dials the phone and *presto*, she's on the network.

So yes, slip/ppp works just fine for this sort of thing.
