As I found out (on this newsgroup) you are probably falling into the
same trap as I did, the alias needs a netmask of 0xffffffff
(255.255.255.255)

i.e. ifconfig edx xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx alias netmask 0xffffffff

this should work..
