Try the beta version of Tin (1.3beta).  I sent in some patches so it
will do just that (and they are in the latest version).

The site is ftp.scn.de in /pub/news/tin I believe (tried to check, but
the site is down right now).

Tin 1.3beta is *much* faster indexing than v1.22.  It also offers some
X11 support.  A much more configurable tinrc file and the abiltity to
use elm or Mail so you can get mail aliases.  PGP support is also
there.  I've been running the various 1.3beta's since March with no
real problems.
