I too have a WD0813EP, and I had the same problem when I started the
installation.  I solved it by disable all devices that used the same 
address space/irq as my card and all devices I *knew* I didn't have.  
I also set the iomem and irq values to the ones of my card.
After that my card worked like a dream. 

The driver for WD-cards doesn't auto-probe any values (if I understood the
documentation right), so you either have to configure the card to use the 
kernel default values or change the kernel default values at boot time.

Boot into "configure" mode with "kernel -c" at the boot prompt.
