Try using mSQL (mini SQL). It is very fast and very portable and comes
with a C library, the database server, misc. database clients.

I have used it on FreeBSD, Solaris 2, SunOS 4, Irix, Linux without any
problems whatsoever.

One other major advantage is the low memory consumption.
