I also posted about this earlier, but I'm not sure the article ever
made it the the newsgroup.

I have two systems, a 386DX25 with vga and a 486-DX33 with a Diamond
Speedstar SVGA. I was running 1.1.5.1 and XF86 on the 386 with no
problems. I installed 2.0.5 on both systems. On the '386, the virtual
terminals vanish when you start XF86. You get a blank screen, which
will show some disk activity if you type something on the keyboard.

XF86 and Netscape both run fine on both systems. You can get back
to X from the blank screen on the '386 with Alt-Fx and you can
get back to the blank screen with Ctl-Alt-F1 .

So, there appears to be a real problem. I'm very used to typing
ctl-alt-Fx to get from X to a virtual terminal and did it for a
year with 1.1.5.1, so it's not something that simple.

If you kill X, the virtual terminals do not re-appear. Your only
recourse is to do a hard reboot.
