Upgrade your XFree86 to 3.1.2.  It's linked against -lgnumalloc again
there, which saves you alot of memory, in particular for the X server.

Btw., are you still maintaining the pcemu code?  If so, i've got a
couple of comments on it.  (You can also try out to use FreeBSD's port
of pcemu, you'll find my changes there in the patch directory.)

Netscape is a known memory hog.
