I edit with brief on dos & os2 and think it is the best editor I have
ever used.

I have used the public domain Crisp 2.2 on sco, and have seen It ported
to linux.

I tried to mess with it and compile for freebsd with no luck.

If anybody more skilled has already complied it for freebsd. Please
let me bum a copy.
