FreeBSD does indeed support internal modems.  If this modem is set up
on a com port and reads its commands from the com port it should work.
(ie. I have a USR Sportster v.34/v.FAST/FAX 28.8kb internel modem on 
cuaa1 (com2).


For the firmware upgrade you may have to boot into DOS, unless you want
to port the upgrade software to FreeBSD.  This part would probably be 
more trouble than it is worth.
