Extracted from the FAQ :

7.5. Help, some of my X Window menus and dialog boxes don't work
  right! I can't select them.

Try turning off the Num Lock key.

If your Num Lock key is on by default at boot-time, you may add the
following line in the ``Keyboard'' section of the XF86config file.

  # Let the server do the NumLock processing. This should only be required
  # when using pre-R6 clients
      ServerNumLock
---------------------------------------------------------------------

or upgrade to 3.1.2 which does not have the problem.
