i started playing with union filesystems and found that things were
not working correctly.

i experienced the odd crash and unexpected results when mounting union fs's.

i decided that i would check for more current sources (and found some),
then checked that my config file did, in fact, enable UNION fs.

well, it didn't.

i would assume that union fs's should not work at all if not defined.

but they kinda do.

ick.

i'm gonna start playing again later, with UNION enabled in the config
file to see if that changes anything.
