If you want to run X with an 8MB system, a graphic accelerator is a most since
many of the typical graphic functions for your typical use are performed
by the board. For instance, painting a regtangle, drawing lines, fast
text rendering, etc... For 2 years, I worked on X and ported many X apps
to FreeBSD on a 486DX33 with 8MB of memory. For compiling certain programs
it was best to drop out of X and just compile the program.

To have a smooth running system you may need 16MB of memory. I was forced
to upgrade my system to 32MB because my girlfriend started running
netscape on my system and running xv; so at times we had two netscape
running plus xv or an image processing program.

At any rate, if I were you I would just give FreeBSD a try it does not
take that long to install FreeBSD and who knows you may even like it.
