I have seen this problem on a number of occasions. It seems to go away
when the internal and external caches are turned _OFF_ via the bios.

This behaviour happens with my PC at work on both Linux and FreeBSD,
also another guy here runs a number of Linux boxes and has the problem
on them. I suppose it must be down to slightly crappy motherboards.

Anyone got any thoughts as to why this happens?
