My experience shows you have to have the PAS support in your kernel 
before it will see the CDROM drive.

Is it a Sony CDROM or one of the PAS cards that uses the TRANTOR drivers?

nca0 is for Trantor
scd0 is for Sony CDROM (Again, the PAS card has to have been 'probed' 
before the system will see the CD-ROM.)

If I knew how to make a boot disk with these options enabled for you I would,
but I havn't gotten quite that far in my exploration of FreeBSD.

(You might try installing off the NET if you have Internet access. Just get 
the basic binaries and the kernel src. It only takes about 2 hours at 28.8)
