I used to run smail on 386BSD 0.1 long ago.  3.1.28 used to run fairly well
on it  but  I've switched  to sendmail  when  8.1 came out.   3.1.28 should
compile out of the box if you make the proper configuration file. 

Are you sure you want smail  ? sendmail runs pretty  well and there nothing
you can do with smail but not with sendmail...
