I've had the same problem, but the freebsd handbook <a 
href=http://freefall.freebsd.org/How/handbook/>here</a> seemed to do a 
pretty good job explaining things.  Look specifically in section 10.4 for 
dialup terminals, and 11.4 for setting up a slip server.
