Default password encryption is MD5, and unlikely to change soon.  It's
a strong encryption algorithm (stronger than DES), and it's exportable
code.

However, if you are bound to DES for one reason or the other (NIS,
upgrade from a system with a large installed user base etc.), you can
add the DES distribution, and link libcrypt to libdescrypt.
