It can have an effect of course.

1. you'll have to link qpop with -lcrypt,

2. if  you're  using md5-based crypt,  you'll  have to  check that qpop  is
   compatible with this scheme  (there is 8 bytes  of salt instead of 2 and
   the encrypted password is 21 or 22 bytes long. 
3. If you're using DES-based crypt, -lcrypt should be enough.
