Your best bet is to just install 4.3bsd-reno.  I have (thanks to some other
guys involved in the 4.4bsd->VAX port) a 4.3-reno kernel with a mostly-4.4bsd
top half, and I have been using this to port the bottom half.  Neither kernel
is as stable as 4.3-reno was.  And at this point it's looking like it's not
going to be done by the time 4.4 ships.
