You need to hit return with FreeBSD after connecting..

I'm getting the same throughput -- I just ftped an active file from
one machine to another over a PPP connection - the file is 560k and
I received 7.7 kb/sec over a v.34 connection between a pair of USR
modems locked at 115kb
