(No offense to you, Jon, just my opinion:)

I think this policy would be impossible in Germany.  I have to ask my
employer if i'd like to make some extra money in my spare time, but as
long as i'm going to contribute to non-commercial projects and don't
use any of the company's resources, they cannot prevent me from doing
this.

I'm selling my working-power, not my body/brain to my employer.
