A quick search of all the usual places didn't yield an answer to this:
What is the right way to add the DES encryption *after* you have the
system up and running?  Something like
 
 % tar xzvpf /usr/dist/des.aa
 
cannot replace sbin/init, even in single user mode.

(I'll summarize if there's interest.)
