The option has been here since (async) in /etc/fstab but  is almost a no-op
in 4.4BSD-lite (and so in FreeBSD). I  think 4.4BSD-Lite2 has  a fix for it
that I just saw incorporated in 2.2-CURRENT by David Greenman.
