Check your ppp.conf, and the sample files, again. You'll notice that
all the "on-demand" examples in ppp.conf.sample include the "set ifaddr"
and "add" commands, while the others wait for the connection to be made
before they set the address or route (from ppp.linkup). My demand-dialed
setup does not use ppp.linkup at all. I guess ppp needs the routing info
when it's started in order to make it appear the host is on a network.

Could this be what you are overlooking?

I also ifconfig tun0 from /etc/sysconfig, but I do have the luxury of
a fixed ip address; not sure if dynamic address assignment would allow me
to do the same thing. (It's not necessary to do this, as iijppp does it
for you; but it looks nicer when you boot the machine not to see all
those "network unreachable" type of messages... :-)

Hope this helps.
