I think the reason is, that some Computer-Magazines wrote about it, some
CD-Manufactures saw a chance to make money with it, and so Linux got it's 
free advertising and marketing (My actual PC-magazines shows 6 commercials for
Linux-CD's and a large report on the different Linux-distributions, nothing
large or visible for FreeBSD).

And on the other side I think such stone-age tools like vi should be kicked out
(since they make people who worked with comforable DOS-Editors run away) and
replace them with other editors like JOE.
