You are right, but below I mentioned that I had the exact same
problems with the GENERIC kernel.

Anyway, I got email from someone who told me to upgrade the
"config" utility (I'm trying to compile a new kernel on an
older FreeBSD distribution) and I'll try that first.

Hehe, flamewar !!C00l!! :-) Well, we already have a couple of
Linux boxes (for example a terminal server serving 16 lines of
PPP dialup. It's full every evening and has been up for three weeks)
but I just happen to like a heterogenous environment.. every
OS has it's pros and cons. It's largely just a matter of personal
preference. As we say in Dutch "wat de boer niet kent, vreet-ie niet" :)
