Well, this configuration certainly works well for me.
Are you running nmbd as well as smbd?
Is the tcp/ip working at the Windows end (ping, telnet etc.)?

I'd be happy to mail you configuration files from my set-up, but your mail
address is invalid (there are neither MX nor A records for beauty.ucsb.edu).
