The VAX device drivers and other low-level modules are ridden through and
through with old V32 (Bell Labs) code.  Much of the newer stuff was donated
by Armando et al from DEC, or written by various kind and desperate hackers
such as Chris Torek while he was at UMD.  However, it is likely that even
if a 4.4 port appears (which appears less and less likely as other deadlines
loom ponderously on the horizon), it will not be part of 4.4-lite or other-
wise freely redistributable.  There's just too much original Bell Labs code
in that part of the system; that's why it wasn't on Net-2.
