is from the kernel, the reason this happens is when you install your 
system you did no initially get pppd, so The kernel thinks you don't have 
i. I had the same problem. I fixed it by copying the kernel from another 
system that had it, I tar and feathered the kernel and ftp'ed it. 
If you want mine I can put it on your system, I have a freebsd 2.0.5 
system, so there should not be a problem!
