Looks like the parity is not stripped before the "RING" is compared for.
Do your dialing a 8N1 rather than 7E1 or 7O1.

If your modem doesn't use "RING" to indicate the remote phone is ringing,
then perhaps you are receivign an incoming call every time (not likely 8-)
or you have confused anser and originate settings.
